A group of African crown cranes busily stomp the grass, teaching their chicks how to snatch up bugs while the griffons vultures perch on a rock outcrop waiting for the inevitable. This will introduce you to the wonders of life on the savanna as you venture through the African Trail.
A spectacular array of vegetation depicts the greatest power "plant" on earth. This is the energy that makes everything else possible. Follow this energy through all the living inhabitants of the trail as you walk the path.
See how specializations let different animals get their food. The speedy cheetah lies in disguise in the savanna grass as gerenuk stand tall to reach those tender leaves that are just out of reach of other antelopes. Watch the baboons and mandrills socialize and play to strengthen their family group.
Our longest zoo resident, Khetla, the Rhino will be laying in the sun or working on knocking down the log pile the keepers spent so much time building for him. He spends a lot of time at his feed pad to fuel his 5000 lbs. around his habitat. The inquisitive meerkats will always have an eye out for danger when you see them scurrying about, digging for insects. But they will eat just about anything they can find to keep their bodies going.
The lions are not really lazy, they are just conserving their energy because they don't know when they will catch their next meal. The clean up crew is next. Vultures are sure that nothing is wasted on the savanna. You can see them perched on their nest where chicks are visible in the winter. After all is said and done the soil takes back anything left over and become the source of nutrient for the next wave of plants that will fuel the engine of life
